MY APPROACH TO FAMILY PHOTO SESSIONS
Each family session is slightly unique and that is one of the reasons I absolute adore them. Families come in all different shapes, sizes and formations, my aim is to capture the essence of your family in all its authentic chaotic magic. I've worked with tons of different little personalities from the most camera shy little ones to the super sassy divas (one of which I have at home). Often families have a combination of all of the above!
I will tailor each session to suit the family and their vibe. I am super relaxed and certainly don't expect anyone to stand still and be on best behaviour for an hour (that goes for adults as well as children!)
Lots of photographers talk about candid vs posed approaches, I like to mix it up a bit. Candid photos of kids are absolute gold, those little thoughtful expressions and genuine belly laughs are my ultimate favourites. These are the images that really portray your children's personality.
I also like to use some prompts to "create" some great moments, just to clarify I certainly won't be asking anyone to say cheese. My prompts are often sneakily disguised as games for the little ones, this is a great way for me to hold their attention as well as making it enjoyable for them!
Lastly I will always try and get a couple of the more traditional "everyone looking at the camera" kinda shots - These make perfect presents for the grandparents!
CHOOSING YOUR LOCATION
I always recommend choosing a location where you enjoy spending family time, your happy place as a family. This can be anywhere from the beach, park, woodlands or even in the comfort of your own home. The beauty of this means your children can run free to their hearts content and aren't constrained to a formal studio setting, this in turn allows me to capture the spontaneous moments that will really showcase their quirks and character.
If you don't have a particular location in mind I have some personal favourites that I can recommend.
WHAT TO WEAR
Try to co-ordinate rather than match outfits. Neutral and muted tones look beautiful in any season and will also help your images look timeless.
Try to avoid large logos, neon colours and bold prints as this can distract from your images.
Pick a colour pallete and work around that, for example: beiges, tan, olive green, cream and taupe all blend really nicely or whites, greys, pale blues look really fresh. Dress for the weather, if you are planning an autumn/winter session then embrace layers and textures. Accessories like chunky knit scarves / bobble hats will compliment your photographs.
Lastly before choosing your footwear please think about your location. Flip flops in muddy woodlands or high heels at the beach are not a good idea although I bet I would get some funny photos!
CAN WE BRING OUR DOG ALONG?
Absolutely, furry family members are just as welcome as the rest of the family. Some of my top tips for bringing dogs are:
- Chose a location that your pups been to before, new smells and things to explore can encourage scattiness!
- Make sure they have had a good run out before the photo session.
- Bring lots of treats, or if your pooch isn't treat orientated then bring along a favourite toy.
HOW TO GET THE MOST FROM YOUR SESSION
My top tip for making the most of your session is to relax, please please don't panic if your children are being cheeky or not playing ball. It's my job to win them round and if parents get stressed then so do the little ones.
Have fun, let your kids be themselves rather than the 'best behaviour' version of themselves and together we will create some beautiful, authentic family photos to be treasured forever.
