Why You Should Print Your Photos in a World of Ever-Changing Technology
We’re living in a world where technology changes faster than we can keep up. I’m probably showing my age here, but remember floppy disks? Then came CDs, now we’re onto USBs and cloud storage.
Sure, every new way to store things seems like it's going to make life easier. But let’s be honest, who hasn’t felt that heart-sinking moment when something goes wrong? A USB gets corrupted, or your phone bites the dust, and poof those precious memories are gone in an instant.
As a photographer, I see it all the time. People think their photos are safe tucked away digitally, but we’ve all been there. Whether it's an old phone, a crashed laptop, or some random glitch, those irreplaceable pictures can vanish in the blink of an eye. USBs break, cloud accounts get locked or forgotten, and suddenly, those moments you thought were safe are nowhere to be found.
But printed photos? They’re different. They’re real, tangible memories that can’t just disappear. They’re more than just pictures on a screen—they’re keepsakes. One day, these prints will be what your kids and grandkids look back on to remember you by. That’s why the investment you make in photography is so much more than the session itself. It’s about creating something that’ll last for generations.
So don’t let your photos sit hidden away on some USB that could fail or in a cloud account that may not exist forever. Print them! Frame them, put them in albums, make them part of your family’s legacy. Photos are meant to be seen and shared, not lost in some digital black hole.
Now, I’m speaking from a photographer’s point of view, but let me pop on my mum hat for a second. Take school photos, for example. Every year, my daughter has hers taken in front of some random blue backdrop, with a forced smile and perfect posture. Not exactly the kind of photos I’d usually go for, but do I still buy the prints every year? Of course I do! Why? Because when I look at them, I’m flooded with memories of my own school photos, complete with awkward smiles and questionable 90’s fashion trends. Anyone else remember those name headbands? There's something so nostalgic about it, and I want to create that same experience for my own family.
And let’s be real, even as a photographer, I don’t always love how I look in photos. I’ve definitely deleted pictures of me with my daughter because I didn’t like my double chin, or my hair was a mess, or I was wearing something less than flattering. But over time I’ve learned how important it is to keep those images, not just for me, but for her too. One day, she'll look back at those photos and see the memories, not the imperfections. I remember the comfort my own parents found when they stumbled across old photos of their parents who were no longer with us. Those pictures become priceless.
And that’s really why I do what I do.
Not just to create beautiful images for today, but to give families something they can hold onto years from now. The kind of photographs that end up in albums on coffee tables, framed on walls, or tucked safely into boxes that get rediscovered years later.
Because one day, these won’t just be photos.
They’ll be memories of how small your children once were, the way they held your hand, the chaos and laughter that filled your home.
And trust me... those everyday moments pass faster than we ever expect.
So whether it’s a family session, newborn photos, or simply making the effort to print the images you already have, don’t wait for the “perfect” time.
The real magic is in documenting life exactly as it is right now.
